A prayer for today: 31a

O Lord my King, I greet you with reverence at the beginning of another day! All praise and love and loyalty be unto you, O Lord most high!

Forbid, O Lord God, that my thoughts today should be entirely captured by the world’s passing show. Seeing that in your kindness you have given me the power to ponder the unseen and eternal world, do not allow me to remain content with consideration of the material world. Grant rather that each day may do something so to strengthen my hold upon the unseen world, in order to increase my sense of its reality, and in order to attach my heart to its holy interests. As the end of my earthly life draws ever nearer, may I grow more and more conformed to the life of the world to come, rather than these fleeting earthly surroundings.

O you who see and know all things, give me grace, I pray, so to know you and so to see you that in knowing you I may know myself even as I am most perfectly known by you, and in seeing you may see myself as I truly am before you. Give me today some clear vision of my life in time from your eternal perspective. Show me my own smallness and your infinite greatness. Show me my own sin and your perfect virtue. Show me my own callousness and your exceeding love. Yet in your mercy show me also how, small as I am, I can take refuge in your greatness; how, sinful as I am, I may lean upon your virtue; and how, callous as I am, I may hide myself in your forgiving love. Cause me to ponder the life and death of Jesus Christ my Lord, so that I may see all things in the light of the redemption which you have granted to me in His name. Amen.
