A prayer for today: 20a

Almighty God, out of your infinite wisdom you have designed that I should live my life within these narrow bounds of time and circumstance; let me now venture out into the world with a brave and trustful heart. It has pleased you to withhold from me a perfect knowledge; still I pray for the grace of faith to grasp things unseen. You have given me little power to mold things to my own desire; therefore use your own omnipotence to bring your desires to pass within me. You have willed it that I will face obstacles as I walk the upward way; be my fellow traveler as I go.

Let me face what you send with the strength you supply:
When you bless my endeavors, let me take notice so that your word may bless my heart:
When you call me to go through the dark valley,
let me not persuade myself that I know a way round:
Ward off my refusal of any opportunity of service which may offer itself today,
and my acquiescence to any temptation that may lie in wait for me:
Do not allow the sins of yesterday to be repeated in the life of today,
nor the life of today set any evil example to the life of tomorrow.
O God of my forebears, who have in every age enlightened the souls of the faithful, I thank you for the gift of the storied past which still lives with us today. I thank you for the lives of the saints, and for the help that I may win from their example. I thank you for apostles, prophets, and martyrs; but most for our Savior and your Son, Jesus Christ, in whose name I pray. Amen.
