DIY Grad Gifts from old jeans!

Graduation Gift | gift bag from jeans | Easy to Sew
Graduation Gift | gift bag from jeans | Easy to SewHow bittersweet to celebrate the high school graduations of two young men I've know since they were small children. I am so proud of them and so happy that they have purpose and direction in their lives. Still, I'm a little sad that soon they'll be away at college and I won't be seeing them as often.

I wanted to bring more than a card to their graduation parties, so I made up these little gift bags from old jeans and put in some items that I thought they'd need when away from home: Bandaids and non-aspirin pain reliever, Febreeze and Tide stain remover, nail clippers and Q-tips.

Paper Piggy Bank | Graduation Gift | Sizzix shape
Of course I had to include a piggy "bank" with some cash! I folded some pink paper and cut it with my Sizzix die with the fold just inside the front of the pig's snout. A little folded tape held the tail end closed, making a sleeve for the money.  This could be adapted to hold a gift card, as well.

The signs are simply printed on cardstock, then cut out and taped to barbecue skewers.  I also made a circle with our name, which is on the back of one of the signs. I used a little piece of scrap styrofoam to anchor the skewers.

Both bags were lined with chevron-striped fabric. For the one with the gray stripes, I turned in the denim and the lining fabrics and top stitched close to the edge and 1/4" away for that flat-felled look. I didn't turn down a cuff on the one with the red lining. You can see here that I turned under the lining on that one and left the denim to ravel. I think that the top-stitching with "jeans" thread completes the look.

Sew happy!
